recognition is one way to apply classification. Any other interpretations?

Saneman:
They can be different. For example, when I do color classification
I'm classifying a pixel's color into one of a few different groups and
that doesn't have anything to do with a pattern. The pattern that the
colors may or may not have doesn't enter into the decision of what
class it belongs to. Moreover, you can do classification on things
that aren't even images, such as feature vectors.
However they can be the same, for example I'm classifying targets into
"tank," "artillery," etc. based on a spatial pattern of appearance
that they typically take in an image.
