Yes it can. It can be positive, negative, or even a complex number.
It can be integer or floating point. It can be monochrome, color, or
multispectral. All that matters is that it describes the spatial
characteristics of an image. Spatially, the image can be 2D, 3D, or
even higher dimensions. Not sure how to explain these concepts other
than just to state that it is so.
