It's a pretty complex question, and I'm now looking forward to getting
some sound-analyzing programs on my computer, if I ever get the thing
working right.

One thing that could be a little misleading is the fact that normally,
with no special intonation, when you have more than one H in succession,
each one is slightly lower in pitch than the preceding one. As a
musician, I'm sure you're aware of that.

People who claim that initial long unaccented syllables begin on a
higher pitch than short ones don't mean that the first H of HHHH would
be higher than the second. If they did, I wouldn't believe the claim
either.

What they mean is that the rise in pitch between the $B$=(B and the $B$s(B of $B$=(B
$B$s$J(B is not as great as that between the $B$=(B and the $B$N(B of $B$=$NL>(B.
