I'm not sure if Mathematica's syntax is more intuitive than Maple (but
its programming language is certainly more powerful). I have tried to
teach a few friends to program in Mathematica and some of them
apparently had a hard time grasping the concepts. But how quirky you
find Mathematica probably depends on whether you have some experience
with functional and logical languages (not to say your experience with
C, Java and the like won't help) so I can't speak for everyone.

Anyway, I'm with Curt in suggesting Mathematica. The biggest drawback is
its price, but here's good news if you're a student. They have a student
license version and you can get your hands on a fully-functional product
with very few restrictions for ($B$$$/$i$+CN$j$^$;$s$,!"$^$"0B$$CMCJ(B) and
it's definitely worth it.
