I'm not an expert on US. Having said that, i have to
express my greatest amazement about what you
just mentioned. I've been in US twice and i've always
been stroke how waiting people make sure that they
don't cut the line and they do that most willingly and
purposefully. The cars stop for pedestrians and the
drivers seem to be very careful making sure that the
traffic is a wholistic thing not "I, ME, MINE"-issue.

Nowhere else in the world (Sweden being the first
place to exclude!) have i been treated with "pleases",
"sorries", "excusemes" and "thankyous". May that be
because the average inhabitant of America is affraid
of either lawsuit or deportation. May that be because
i'm 260 pounds distributed somewhere between the
ground and 6'3" above it with looks that my 日本の友達
describe as 怖い. Still, it works as far i have seen it.
