        Very often DVD's have multiple sets of subtitles, one for
    the normal translation, and one that's closed captioned for the
    hearing impaired. You probably had the wrong set turned on.

        Now what I want to know is where you found となりのトトロ on
    DVD with the Japanese dialog. All that's available in region 1
    is English dialog, so I've been steadfastly avoiding seeing it
    until somebody fixes that.
