I don't think that you will get a lot of responses that are meaningful.
The real problem is that you are trying to plot out a methodical plan of
attack that is going to get completely rearranged once it hits real
life. Should you take note of unfamiliar words? Sure. Should you keep a
pad to write them down? Sure. Should you concentrate on common words?
Sure. Should you ignore rare words? If you hear them or see them, think
of them as common. Should you plot out a rigid plan of attack to guide
your next year of life? No.
For the record, calling me a "successful language learner" would be an
exaggeration. After four years of serious study, I can read magazines,
struggle with novels, write understandably (but with an obviously
non-native style, riddled with grammatical errors), understand
substantial slabs of spoken vocabulary, and get utterly tongue-tied when
called upon to speak extemporaneously.
