Whenever we American's feel bad about loosing in Nam, we always remember
that the French lost there first.
I grew up in Pittsburgh, originally settled by the French who had
established Fort Duquesne where the confluence of the Allegheny and
Monogahalia rives forms the Ohio river. George Washington, heading up the
Virginia militia, attempted to claim jump Pennsylvania and grab Western Penn
for Virginia... along with with a group of Brits from the Highland regiment
"The Black Watch", currently of Iraq fame. Militia Captain George
Washington received a very firm ass whopping by the French in that
campaign... and even the assistance of one of Britains fiercest Scotish
regiments didn't help much. In fact, the only reason people in this area
speak English today is because good ole Ben Franklin engineered a series of
bridges that allowed the entire PHiladelphia militia to peirce the mountains
of western Penn. In the second confrontation with American/British forces,
the French withdrew from what is now Pittsburgh without so much as a shot
being fired. In my opinion, the French are not lacking in national courage,
they're just very pragmatic about whether or not they have a shot at winning
or not.
