A week ago I picked up 'Royal English Grammar' (new revised
edition). (The 14 Regent Street bookshop in London is
highly recommended by me by the way).

It's very interesting (no, really it is) but I have to admit
that for at least half the grammatical terms I didn't know
the English version. As they generally don't have example
sentences in EDICT I've put together a few, with one word
not in EDICT at the end of the post.

The below example sentences _aren't_ from that book, but
instead were Googled off various web-sites. Translations by me.

The 'subject' is the person or object to carry out the action in the
sentence. Transformed to Japanese it would be the part that ends
'~ wa' or '~ ga'.

The 'predicate' is that part that shows the action in the sentence,
in Japanese it would be the part that ends in 'da', 'suru' and such.

The object is that which in Japanese would generally be indicated with
'ni' or 'o'.

A "modifier" has, just as it sounds, the role of embelishing sentences.

In English there are eight main parts to speech (noun, verb, adjective,
pronoun, preposition, conjunction and finally interjection.
