It seems to me I heard somewhere that Marc Adler wrote in article

I have some reservations about the generality of that statement. Travel
agencies always seem to want the full name, service businesses seem to
want the last if not the full, and busy restaurants and golf courses
seem to prefer the last name to avoid 17 Johns showing up for
reservations at the same time. (And more than a few businesses use the
last name to pull up their computer files on the customer.)

Is there a Hugh in the house?

Old age is when you start saying "I wish I knew now what I knew then."
