This happens not just in translation, but in conversation as well.
Surely we've all been asked "How do you say this in English?", and
answered "We don't say that in English." Not that we *can't* say
whatever particular phrase in English, just that we *don't*. Language
isn't just how you put words together, it's also what words you put
together.
Back to the original question, I've recently been having a lot of fun
reading Edogawa Ranpo. Slightly archaic language, but some interesting
stuff. For something modern, I really enjoyed a collection of short
stories by Ekuni Kaori. Haven't read any of her novels yet. Also,
Yoshimoto Banana is another contemporary author that you may want to
try.
