To add to the answers (the consensus seems to be that they're very
close, and most of the time 捜す is used):

In non-pedagogical text, when you see a word written as hiragana, it's
because the writer expects you to disambiguate the possible kanji from
context. Either there's one obviously applicable kanji, or the kanji is
archaic and redundant, or (as in this case) the kanji choices give
subtle differences in meaning that aren't important to distinguish in
the given instance.

In Halpern (NJECD), 捜 has the meaning "LOOK FOR", 探 has the meaning
"PROBE" or "SEARCH". As a usage note, 捜す is "[also 探す] look for (a
lost object), search for, hunt for"; 探す is "[also 捜す] search for
(something desired), search about, look for". Each has the other as an
alternate for the same usage, indicating they are frequently used
interchangeably.

They're both filed in my brain under "search"; 捜 has a nuance of
"search (seek)", 探 has a nuance of "search (investigate)".
