I was buying a copy of the ghost in the shell manga from amazon.co.jp and
found a novel of the first 4 episodes of "stand alone complex". They are
250 pages of relatively easy to read kanji. I am not sure about the age
range, but I am working through a little bit every day. I did get a "real"
novel at the last Japanese School sale. It was "bringing out the dead".
Not that good and very hard to read. At least with the novels of stand
alone complex, I know all of the characters and the base of the story.
Might be worth a try. Only 252 pages in a 4 x 6 format. Plenty of room for
notes in the margins if you like to do that.
