My little area in Tokyo's Western suburbs is littered with 台s and が丘
s. 青葉台, あかね台, 松風台, 桂台, すずかけ台, and so on. Easy enough
to understand. There's also 美しが丘, 緑ヶ丘, 藤が丘, 自由が丘, 梅が丘,
and probably many more that I can't think of right now. My question:
why do the 丘s have がs but the 台s don't? There is no 青葉が台 that I
know of, for example, nor is there a 美し丘 or anything similar.

What is that が and where did it come from?
