Hmm, weird.
It seems Outlook Express has changed the way <PRE> tags behave.
What do you mean? How do you use <PRE> tags in OE?
Never heard of html email / newsposts? ( lucky you :-P
I've simply saved the text to .html file with <html><body><pre> and </pre></body></html> tags, and opened in Internet Explorer.
Which is pretty much what you do with OE except you don't have to save to .html file or open with Internet Explorer. The OE procedure sounds complicated, but I'd bet it's actually faster than the IE one... if it wasn't that they've seem to have changed how <PRE> works with OE.
