But the definition won't work as well for the second, which isn't adverbial.

My intuition says the first of these could be covered in principle with
添える's role as a suffix noted elsewhere, but the second has to be
included.

Which apparently means I don't think 足す's role as a suffix is as
productive. That might not stand up against empirical research.
