Is it an to show example or to illustrate?

I was enjoying my sunday hobby, which is browsing my
電子辞書 and i noticed that the icon that shows some
examples for the selected word has this character on
it: 例 and i got curious what it abbreviates. The
obvious candidates are, of course:
a) 例示, since れいじする is to illustrate as in to
illustrate the semantical contents by an example,
b) 例える, since たとえる is to give an example for
the looked up word,
c) other, since there always is a slight possibility
that something strange/irregular occured.

So, which is it? I can use the dictionary without
knowing it but still, when refering verbally to that
icon i'd like to express myself more sofistically
than "that icon", hehe.
