KGII and Marc had distinctly different knowledges of Japanese, it always
seemed to me. Not that I didn't envy both of them.
Marc is one of a type I find particularly unappealing--the second such I
have known in the last 50 years, but their common interest in Basque is
purely coincidence--the sort who can pick up on a new language virtually
overnight.
