爾 is the origin of ン.
「尓」は「爾」の略体字(俗字)ですね。
Even given that, the point is about the "origin of katakana n", so whether it originated from 尓 or 爾 is actually relevant, even if they are variants of the same character.
Jim Breen's Seeley book claims there is no original kanji. My best option at the moment seems to be just to put everything there and leave it to the reader to decide.
