That is correct, it has been developped by the same group that invented
MP3 but is "better". See http://www.apple.com/mpeg4/aac/

That is correct too, but probably too complicated for someone who does
not want such a geek solution.

That is correct too, but can you show me the difference between a 196
kbps MP3 and the original ? Because frankly I don't hear it, so I don't
care at all.
