There was some discussion here of such usage recently. We have heaps of organizations known by their initials, and some always have a definite article (the ABC, the ALP, the VCA, etc.)
and others never do (BHP, CRA, QUT, etc.) No-one seems to be able
to generate a determinstic rule to explain it.


Then you have cases like Handel's most famous work: "Messiah".
Many people can't resist adding an article and calling it "The Messiah", but that's not its name, according to the
guys who wrote it.


Not to be "on topic," but I've always wondered about "The Kojiki," "The
Nihongi/Nihonshoki."

Then when I think of "Taj Mahal" and "Hague," I guess there's no sense
in wondering about these things.

What do you think about that country where Kiev is?
