ride your body

A little kid named Charlie is listening raptly to his grandparents'
story. Then the book says

「その人、何したの?」と、チャーリーが身を乗り出した。

I assume that 身を乗り出す is some sort of expression that means Charlie
is listening raptly, perhaps leaning forward in anticipation? This
expression is not in WWWJDIC or any of my other usual dictionaries, but
it gets 147,000 Altavista hits.

Who can tell me what this expression means?
