How about this:
The topic, once introduced, can be used again as the subject, object,
or whatever else, without being specified again.
I agree with you that the topic in a sentence is a separate
grammatical role and doesn't ever conflate to some other role; but,
once introduced, I think it can be referenced in another role, without
even mentioning it.
A subtle distinction, but one that I think exists.
