Edict : ijikeru

The current Edict entry
いじける (v1) to grow timid (from an inferiority complex)
seems strangely specific and (the latter half at least) doesn't bear much relation to how I've seen it in use.
広辞苑 has
1. To cower and freeze from fear.
2. To become numb from cold.
3. ひねくれて臆病になる。
(The last one seems to be how I've seen it used but I can't think of how to put it in English.
"Contrarily become a coward" sounds terrible.
