It's a pain trying to find decent books at my local*
Japanese book shop because it doesn't separate fiction by category, all the book spines look the same and I don't know any of the authors.
Anyway I finally found an OK book of the fantasy genre : 夏の魔術 by 田中芳樹
I'd rate it about 7.5 / 10
I'd recommend it to fairly advanced language learners.
Although the vocabulary is quite steep and the furigana a tad on the low side it is written in modern Japanese
and doesn't have any fictional dialects or such.
As far as the book goes it's a pretty well written, but not outstanding, fantasy / horror (tad more the former than the latter IMO). If it was in English I'd think it was aimed at teens more than older readers.
One sentence in it also introduced me to the だの grammatical structure http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/search.php?MT=%A4%C0%A4%CE&kind=je&kwassist=0&mode=0&jn.x=27&jn.y=9
