I'm not too impressed that the only way I can reliably look up Japanese text is to use the Japanese site.
I think it shows the relative level of independance between the different Yahoo sites compared to that of Google more than a difference in the base level of compentance.
I have the (uninformed) impression that Google is pretty monolithic whereas Yahoo Japan is a separate company that licensed the trademark and technology from Yahoo Inc. (United States). As such it's not surprising that Yahoo Japan would improve it's handing of Japanese text searches or that such improvements might not flow
back that easily to Yahoo (US).
