Contrary to what most believe, and I limit this comment to my experiences
with Japanese researchers and executives in larger corporations -> I have
found that generally speaking, the older the guy was, the more proficient
with English he was... If only because he already has a US or other English
speaking tour under his belt, and has been on that many more foreign
assignments. This usually works in your favor if you want somebody to help
you with Japanese because they need to use you as an English sounding board
less, and have a better appreciation of the differences in the language.
