[...] Showing the document to another professional translator for purposes of translating the document does not qualify as 公開ing it. I mean, unless the person you're doing this translation for had you sign a contract regarding disclosure, then _that person_ was violating the "law" (as if it were even possible to violate Japanese law in Hawaii, christ almighty) by showing _you_ the koseki. In fact, under that logic, if someone gets a copy of their koseki and shows it to a friend, under the law, they ought to be handcuffed, frisked, smacked around a bit, held for 21 days incommunicado, and all the rest.
It's not only the 公開 issue; I was starting to be concerned about the 閲覧 thing. If *nobody* can legally peruse these things, can anyone still even write in them? What if the 戸籍吏's eyes wandered? If no one can peruse them at all, why not just shred them?
I've just seen three new posts from Cindy and Kouji Ueshiba that provide what would seem to be the common sense answer to my doubts, so if I had a scanner and my deadline hadn't been yesterday (except the guy didn't call me back this time; I've never actually met him), I would be tempted to scan it, obliterate the proper nouns and the dates, and post it.
As it is, I'm ready to give him what I've got, no charge, and forget it. (I told him I figured it'd take me two full days [I *always* underestimate these things] and would settle for two days rent. But I shouldn't need to work this hard for a lousy $100 any more.)
Anyway, just *see* if I'm trying to get out of buying you a beer. But I've only gone out to bars twice in my 30 years in Honolulu, so have no favorite in Waikiki.

Anyway, just *see* if I'm trying .
