EDICT: red and blue telephones

Edict has these two entries.

青電話 【あおでんわ】 (n) blue public phone
赤電話 【あかでんわ】 (n) public telephone

1. Are those designations still in current use or
are they obsolete?

2. Apart from being 'red' or 'blue' is there no other useful defining characteristic to describe
them?
