I like those English translations.

The third Japanese, I think, would become better
when you add more words and close the sentence like
「目標は、、、、、理解することに(or で）ある。」 or
「目標は、、、、、理解にある。」。

Thank you. It may be my personal whim but I think it looks like a である sort of sentence so I think I'll go with that option.
