Thank you. It may be my personal whim but I think it looks like a である sort of sentence so I think I'll go with that option.

OK. I added those 3 with ことである at the end of the 3rd.

You may want to hold off on adding these yet as I'm also collecting opinions from English@2ch (although the quality of such varies from "insightful" to "bog awful").


For example it was suggested that with

どちらが望んだのか判然とはしない。

the "どちら" implied a selection from a known group/couple which wasn't represented in the English (and could be).

So rather than

どちらが望んだのか判然とはしない。
It isn't clear who wanted that.

Possibly

どちらが望んだのか判然とはしない。
It isn't clear which of them wanted that.

would be better.



Going through my collection of (untranslated) example
sentences it's surprising how many are unsuited for WWWJDIC
and (somewhat) disappointing how many of them are darn
difficult to translate. :-P

Probably comes under "unsuitable" (unless you add a [manga] tag)

and

忝い
有難くも、わざわざhit越えのお祝いイラストを頂いてしまいました!本当にかたじけないです

was (to my surprise) darn difficult for me to translate.
