First off - should these two really be different entries?

ほど (prt) indicates approx. amount or maximim; upper limit
程 【ほど】 (n-adv,n) degree; extent; bounds; limit; (P)

(1)

Secondly anybody come across this use of ほど?
(I expect so - I think it's quite common but it doesn't appear to be
covered by Edict)

But maybe that's the easiet way to suggest the prt is best written in
kana and the noun in kanji?

That comment would fit up in (1) "this use of ほど" and on was
referring to からほど遠い.

In any case the best wasy to suggest that the prt is best written in
kana would be

程 【ほど】 (n-adv,n) (1) degree; extent; bounds; limit; (2) (prt) (uk) indicates approx. amount or maximim; upper limit

or similar.
