But I thought that Win XP Pro was Win XP Pro, and could be set to

English environment to a Japanese environment? What exactly does
someone buying just the default XP in Japan get?
Thanks very much for the help so far. But I'd also like to get an
answer to the above question. And are there really XP Pro versions
available for various languages, as there were for Win 98?
Yes, there are localized versions of Windows XP Pro for various
languages. However, the support for Japanese in English Windows XP (Pro
or Home) is excellent. Any well behaved Japanese program should run fine
in English Windows XP, though you probably will have to set the language
for non-Unicode programs to Japanese under Regional and Language Options.
In my experience, it is common for manuals and promotional materials for
Japanese software programs to say that a 日本語OS環境 is necessary, but
this generally only means that your Regional and Language Options must
be set properly.
