Hi ***,
I guess that you want to make your Win XP (may English ver.) as a
Win XP (JPN ver). Is my understerstanding correct? If my understanding
is correct, I know a method whick can help you solve your problem.
At first, you must use an English verion Win XP. This is precondition
of this solution. Then you can install a multiple-language package at
the base of your original EN ver. Winxp. You can use key word "winxp
multiple language package" in Google to get more information. After you
install that package successfully, you can change the original English
language to other languages in the package. As I knew, that package at
least includes Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Japanese,
Korean, Germany. Many more other languages may alse be included. If you
do like this, you can completely change the language of your WinXP to
Japanese including JPN shift-jis code. I think it will satisfiy your
need.
At last, I would repeat the precondition again. It is that this
method is only applicable for English Version WinXP. If you has other
questions, please do not hesitate to tell me. I would like to try my
best to help you solve it.
Wish you Good Luck!

Thank you, Peng Yi. I'm not sure, but it seems the closest thing I
could find is http://tinyurl.com/bb9ql
Doesn't do Japanese.
, which leads to a page that requires me to have Win XP Embedded.
The page it "leads to" is presumably
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E1310D06-F663-4897-9951-5D70A108D104&displaylang=en
which does include the Win XP Embedded _download_ and Multilingual User
Interface.
If I had the Embedded, then the language pack
would enable me to switch back and forth between English and Japanese.
If you have the English Windows XP then you can download and install
Win XP Embedded ... is the way I understood it.
But my Win XP Pro is not the Embedded version. Is my understanding not
correct?
Not correct, I think.
I'm using an English Win XP Home Edition. I can display and write in
Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other languages, because there is
pre-installed software which needs to be activated first. This also includes
fonts as well.
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional and Language Settings
You will get a pop up dialogue window with three tabs.
Select the "Languages" tab and click on "Install files fo East Asian
Languages" under the "Supplemental Language Support" section. Above it, in
"Text Services and Input Languages", click on the Details button.
A second new pop up dialogue window pops up. Click on the "Add" button
Under "Input Language" select the East Asian language you wish, for instance
Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or whatever. Under Chinese, if you want
traditional characters, you select Taiwan or Hong Kong. For simplified
Chinese, you can choose PRC or Singapore.
Now you must set the "Keyboard layout/IME". For instance, if you wanted
Japanese highlight click on the box for Keyboard and layout/IME.
Click on OK, and you will have set it up. A language bar will be created
with your default setting, say in EN English. The JPN Japanese option will
also show. Either the language bar resides in the bottom of the worktop in
the tool bar, or you can liberate it by clicking on it and then Show the
Language Bar.
If you want any more information, WinXp's help and support, click on the
desktop and then press F1. Type in the "search"
IME language input, and look for
"Add another keyboard layout or Input Method Editor (IME)"
and all the info you need is there.
This will allow you to input in Japanese, and display Japanese, but in my
experience, from wanting to use software developed on for Chinese XP, the
characters do not show up properly even at the set up stage, and everything
is aborted. I would imagine software destined for Japanese XP would not
display characters properly during its setup either.
