Why eliminate perfectly healthy kana?



Finally found these forgotten kana
ゑ ヱ ゐ ヰ ヹヸヺヷ

Now I wonder why they were eliminated? They are still in the codepage but not accessible through IME as far as I can tell. If japanese used this there would be no more eating baikingu or calling someone bikutoria.

I wonder when they were killed off? After the occupation?
