If anyone is using Linux, may I recommend upgrading to Fedora Core 5? I
was really surprised at how good the Japanese support has now become
with the SCIM and Anthy systems. It is now fairly competitive with the
Japanese language input support on Windows. Best of all is that SCIM
works in conjunction with GNU Emacs (I'm an Emacs user) which saves
having to use the horrible convertor which comes with GNU Emacs. I had
some small problems with setup, as usual with Linux :(, so if anyone has
any problems I'd be happy to try and help.

Is Anthy better than Canna? Perhaps I should switch.

The current setup on Fedora Core 5 is absolutely miles ahead of Fedora
Core 4. I was quite surprised because I didn't think Linux would ever
support Japanese properly. I don't really know which bits are which, but
it's definitely worth trying. By the way, it solved my other problems
with font display as well. One of the reasons I've been using Windows
since I came to Japan was that the Japanese support in Linux was always
very troublesome, but now it seems there is a competitive Linux answer
for Japanese. Other important points for me personally are that it works
with the Japanese keyboard as well, which is a minor miracle, and
doesn't foul up Emacs in the way that the Fedora Core 4 system did, so
at last I can press the henkan button and go into Japanese in Emacs.
There are still some bugs but at this rate of progress I would expect
them to be resolved quite soon.

Oh, I wasn't talking about switching to Fedora. (I've been using this
Gentoo installation for the last 3 or 4 years now!) I was talking about
changing my 変換 engine. Do you find Anthy comparable to, say, the MS IME?
