Um, it doesn't? Director is 監督(かんとく) in Japanese.

Okay, I'll refine the question. Why does the credit of Director use
entirely different characters in Chinese and Japanese ? And why is the
credit for Director (in J) so similar to the credit for Producer (in
Chi) ?
