Re: Producer in Chinese, Director in Japanese

Sharptongue <sharptongue@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> dixit:

Okay, I'll refine the question. Why does the credit of Director use
entirely different characters in Chinese and Japanese ?

The short answer is that they are different languages, and while
the morphological processes for forming words in Chinese and
漢語 in Japanese are similar, they are not the same. (*)

And why
credit for Director (in J) so similar to the credit for Producer (in
Chi) ?

For a similar reason that the word for sheep in French (mouton) is similar
to the word for sheep flesh in English.

Explore words like 手紙, 相手, etc. in both languages. 写真 means
photograph in Japanese. In Hong Kong it also means photograph, but, er,
with not *quite* the same nuances as in Japanese. 8->>}

(*) Some Chinese speakers are quite convinced that Japanese is a
Chinese dialect, and that where they differ it's an error on the
part of the Japanese. There an old story of a Taiwanese tourist in
Nara who wanted to go to the train station. He wrote "train" in Chinese
on a piece of paper and gave it to a taxi driver, who promptly took
him to the fire station.
