Cindy gave a version of it like mine, with the (unnecessary?) placement
of the "where" first, and topicalizing the "he," namely [my glosses]:
doko-de kare-wa teki-ni deat-te fushiawase-ni natta-to
where-at he-no enemy-dat come upon-and unhappy-dat became-quote
omoimasu-ka
(you) think-?
and said it made sense, which seems like it should answer your question.
But this sentence, as it lacks the crucial "because-clause", isn't of
much help and relevance to my inquiry. Now you have probably known
that.
Right! I was thinking (I still like to call it that) that I had used the "... deat-ta-kara ..." version. The two versions are virtually synonymous, as the '-te' is more or less "and *so*" in this kind of context. But it is indeed a coordinate-, not a subordinate-, clause-maker. Sorry 'bout that.

Now I seem to understand the target what Ray has wanted to confirm
in Japanese language.
I now realise a certain sentence is very hard to compose in English but
easy in Japanese.
Yes, those are such sentences like Ray presented:
"Do you think..... " + " so and so because such and such....where
(when,how etc.)" ?
In English you have to express in two sentences like,
"So and so. But where(when, how etc) do you think such and such?"
In Japanese one sentence would do:
"Doko de (itsu, dono youni) etc. such and such shita node so and so
to anata wa omoi masuka?"
I'm sorry I'm not able to make such a grammatical formation as Ray
seems to requests for.
