I have the four Bonjinsha "Basic" and "Intermediate" books and have
been through the "Basic" set once and have looked through the
"Intermediate" set. These strike me as designed for pure "wrote"
learning. I can accept this, but if there is a better way I am up
for trying it.
Are you in Japan, or near a Japanese bookstore? If so, look at the books
provided to help schoolchildren go through the same process, with lots
of examples of the use of each kanji in context (admittedly at a level
that's more appropriate for said children, but it does get better as you
learn more kanji).
Alternatively, there are at least two sets of books published to help
people pass the Kanken exams, such as: <http://tinyurl.com/ehs69> Each
has a couple of hundred kanji split up into small groups followed by a
few pages of test questions on readings and stroke order, including
short sentences using single and multiple kanji in context. There's a
removable booklet at the front for practicing writing, and an answer
booklet at the back.
