I read "Aspects of the Theory of Syntax" about 25 years ago. I got an A+ in
a course called "Morphology and Syntax," etc. etc. I have a degree in
linguistics, believe it or not. Admittedly, I haven't thought much about the
abstract theoretical syntax stuff in quite a few years, since my involvement
with language is on the ground, teaching a language to teenagers. But I
would say I probably don't qualify as a complete idiot or ignoramus in these
matters. And I found your question opaque. You came to a group that is all
To Sean:
Judging from your post in which you said my question was opaque and
weren't sure whether the (bad) English sentence was intentional, it
struck me that it is fair to say you didn't read my question in the
beginning of thread , and/or other other exchanges between the group
members and me very carefully. In my question as it stands, I
explicitly stated that such sentences are ungrammatical. If you had
read carefully and applied your deductive faculty, you would not have
posted your 2nd post regarding whether my question was opaque or not.
For this reason, I doubt that you are in a position to say whether my
question was really opaque or not and whether I was polite or not.
And pardon me for saying that you are a perfect example of people who
criticize without really knowing what is going on.
Gee, Ray. You've managed to piss off a fair number of people so far. Most of
them go months or years on end without being pissed off in this group. But
you're probably right. No one understands you. Everyone else is to blame.
Happy motoring.
Sean, as someone who claimed to have studied linguistics, do you really
know a linguist must understand thoroughly something they argue against
and provide evidence to support their argument? That means they have to
READ carefully the theroy or proposal they don't think is correct. This
will be helpful not only when you are writing a critique of journal
papers, but also when you are engaging in a conversation with others.
Take my advice, which is important to your future career. And you shall
thank me for bringinng this to your attention. (I'm starting to sound
like muchan. LOL)
Your advice will truly make Sean a better Japanese teacher.
By the way, a part of your sentence:
do you really know a linguist must understand thoroughly something they argue against and provide evidence to support their argument?
is supposed to be:
do you really know that a linguist ...
or
do you really know a linguist who must understand ...
Which is it?
