Not necessary.

or

do you really know a linguist who must understand ...

Makes no sense.

The real error is a plural pronoun referring to a singular
subject. That's one of my pet peeves, it is. And by the gods,
the next kitten I adopt is going to be named Peeve. The one on
my desk still thinks he's a kitten, at 11.4 kg, and he really
peeves me when he's up here.
