Hm. Weird. I've got a current version of XP w/ the IMEs, so as far
as that goes, I should be fine (and as I noted, Thunderbird works
great for formatting the text, though its organization of messages
leaves something to be desired). I took another stab at Agent, even
upgrading it to the 30-day trial full version; switched every setting
I could find to Japanese, set all the fonts to Mincho, but no go --
text input looks like it's going to work, but when I commit the
temporary buffer to the window, all I see is question marks; and
when reading a post, all I get is gibberish -- classic mojibake.

It's deep in the night now, but let me note down all my settings for you in the next day or so. I suppose it's true of most newsreaders, but at least in Agent there is some interaction between some of the configuration parameters, but at least my setup could serve as a jumping off point.

Isn't it odd how "the next day or two" tends to drag on for a while?

I don't think my system configuration is relevant, except that I'm using
WinXP SP2, the East Asian Languages package, and the IME. I'm starting
with the assumption that your WinXP East Asian Languages package and the
IME are correctly installed; from your description they probably are but
it never hurts to double-check. :-). I did switch to Mincho fonts and
looked at a few incoming messages successfully, but I didn't try
composing with Mincho.

I'm using Agent 3.3, but these same settings have worked properly in
earlier Agent versions, too, once I installed WinXP and set up the
language.

My settings are probably not the only ones that work, but they do work
reliably for me. I have:
