I did choose ISO-8859-1 from the menu before ftp'ing. Any hints for me
as to why the code still came out wrong?
No, the code came out right then. If you select ISO-8859-1 the *only*
way you can carry Japanese text is via entity codes.
Well, now I don't know exactly when I had the mental lapse. When I set
the coding, I was shooting for ISO-2022-JP. Apparently I made the same
booboo *twice*!
I just did a trivial page using Mozilla Composer, and saved it with the
"Save and Change Character Encoding" option.
I'll look and see if I have one of those options. And if I don't crash
again, I'll try to fix the page just for fun.

If you are doing more pages of Japanese, best to select a real
Japanese coding or UTF8. Some older browsers don't grok entity codes.
I'm bound to have a lot of Japanese in my final home page, so not too
soon to practice.
