I got around to referring my dad to the above URL, and he showed me his
copy of the book over dinner tonight. It was a Tuttle reprint from the
early 1950s, and he said it was quite a popular book in Tokyo at that
time, and added that the level of Japanese spoken by foreigners in
Japan at that time hadn't advanced much since the book was written. It
was still good for a lot of laughs, and we took turns reading it aloud
over dinner. Does anyone know where "sinjoe" comes from?

Pointing out the existence of a book that my dad had had on his
bookshelf for over half a century was not quite as embarrassing
as when I once tried to justify the utility of the Internet by
showing him how one particular chat technology worked. He said
it reminded him of what his Signal Corps buddies used to do in
their spare time when he was young.

Now my not quite three-year-old son frequently tries to teach me how
to suck eggs, but so far completely without embarrassment.
