Once, i got this hint from Paul Blay (i think it was him)
where he explained how to set up OE so Japanese
coding comes up by default, so ?? doesn't happen.

I have Google the net for it but i can't find it. I'm sure
it is there since i read it once but, perhaps due to a
stress or need (Murphys law, i guess) i just can't
locate it. Help?

I had the same problem. I don't think there's any good solution. OE
doesn't send out headers that allow the decoding to take place
automatically by everyone.

Sure the _default setting_ of OE doesn't 'send out' headers with
charset information. It's only a few mouse clicks away from working
though.

I was fed up with typing it out every time so now it has a small place
on the internet

I thought I'd had OE set up correctly, but I went to the site you
mentioned and followed the instructions. I have to commend you it's
very well written. I first tried posting from OE to misc.test typing
in a sample sentence using the input method editor set to Japanese IME
standard, hiragana input, and general conversion mode. It worked
perfectly. However, when I tried to reply to someone else's post, I
could not even decode the Japanese text in the posted message. The
text was garbled whether I tried to pull up the post on Outlook Express
or using a browser.

I've never had a problem in e-mail. Before last week, the last time I
posted to sci.lang.japan was almost ten years ago. I'd kind of
expected the technology would have advanced to the point that
everything would be handled automatically. Certainly my personal
computing environment is head and shoulders above what it used to be.
I have both US and Japanese software loaded and am able to use them
collaboratively. So I was surprised when some of my posts using OE
were garbled.

The problem seems to be at its worst when I create the Japanese text
directly in OE. If I use a word processor and cut and paste into OE
the problem is less severe. I had no problems reading a response I'd
created that way to somebody else's post. However, he was not able to
automatically decode the text. He finally did so using ISO-2022-JP.
However, I had created it in UTF-8 and when I switched to ISO-2022-JP
all of the Japanese and some of the English became garbled. I've had
no problems posting from Google Groups regardless of whether I type the
Japanese directly in Google or cut and pasted from a word processor.

Any thoughts?

Phil

PS. BTW, I'd like to thank you for your efforts in posting
instructions on the web. The fact that there is no panacea (as far as
I can tell) does not diminish your contribution which was crisp and
clear.
