I thought they said that the character has had cosmetic surgery or

In daily soap operas they do not -- in fact, when a new actor comes
on, often they will actually have a disembodied "narrator" voice say
"The part of [character name] is now being played by [actor name]" so
that the audience knows who it's supposed to be.
