Re: printing problem relapse

Bart Mathias <mathias@xxxxxxxxxx> dixit:
Recently I switched from Mozilla Mail and the plain Mozilla browser (as
part of Mozilla Suite) to Thunderbird and Firefox. They seem to crash
with "segmentation faults" and whatever less frequently than the other
programs did (but when it gets over 28° all bets are off even with the
new programs), and on the whole I've been satisfied with them.

Interesting about the crashes. I used to use Mozilla with RH7.3
and it rarely crashed or froze. I now use Firefox with FDC4 and
I don't think it has crashed once in 8 months. Maybe the PPC ports
are ropy.

Except when I try to print something containing text encoded in Japanese
or the like from either Thunderbird or Firefox, the printer gives me
squares.

Print Preview shows what the printer should print just fine.

It would, since it's using a similar endering system to the rest
of Firefox

Obviously the printer isn't being given access to the correct fonts even
though Print Preview is. But I've been poking around off and on for
more than three weeks trying to find out how to fix that; I even tried
describing the problem at a forum at MozillaZine's Thunderbird Support
group to no avail.

I don't have a printer on my Linux system. I did a "print to file"
and the generated Postscript file seems OK. I can display the file
fine with gv, for example.

Looking in the file, I see it contains Unicode codepoints for all the
Japanese and invokes some general Unicode print/display routines.

Can you print Postscript files on your printer? If so, do they do
Japanese/Korean OK?

You may have to go into Firefox's Printer Properties and specify
that things have to be piped through ghostscript (gs) targetted at your
printer type

ANYWAY, before going any further, look at the discussion
at: http://lists.suse.com/archive/m17n/2005-Mar/0001.html
and follow the thread. Mike Fabian knows his stuff.
