Re: What news reader to use?

Hi,

I've triedf this but to no avail.
Wel It did change the way the japanese character apear from a '?????'
into '&#§ ...'
But it didn't make them readable. I think i'll stick with agent for
downloads and use thunderbird for reading.

Thanks for the help

Hi Don,

Right now I use windows XP, latest updates installed and agent
3.3/32.846.
I have unicode installed. I can see hiragana, katakana and kanji in
all my applications (browser, word, ...).
I have done nothing to agent, because I asumed that agent used the
windows interface to acess fonts and I didn't think make any
adjustments to the news reader.

Agent feels to me very much like an originally-from-unix program. That is,
it's up to you to adjust all the settings. I haven't posted with any
Japanese characters, so I don't know if that's working, but I can read most
posts on sci.lang.japan. Here's what I changed.

1. Make sure you have cp932.cod in the main Agent directory. It
might be (by default) in the All_COD directory.

2. In Options, General Preferences, select Languages. Add Japanese as one
of the supported languages. Once you've added it, highlight Japanese so you
can adjust the settings.

Change the Codepage to Japanese (Codepage 932).

I have the Send Usenet and E-mail set to "Japanese ISO (us-ascii,
iso-2022-jp). The Default Charset is Japanese ISO (iso-2022-jp).
The Text settings are 7bit/8bit.

3. Now, still on the general preferences page, switch to the Display and
select Fonts. Change the pull-down to Japanese and set appropriate fonts.
For variable pitch I'm using MS PMincho 14 pt (Shift-JIS). For Fixed, MS
Gothic 12 pt (Shift-JIS).

4. I also set the properties for this newgroup to default to Japanese.
Right-click the newsgroup and select Properties. The default language
entry on my version is at the bottom of the list. The property page also
has a default properties entry, but that seems to be for all the
newsgroups.
