I saw someone using the Kanji sono mama package on a Nintendo DS Lite
last week and decided I wanted one too. Looks like a serious study tool.

Trouble is, there are no units at all in any of the big stores in
Shinjuku--they all have some ridiculous story about children buying up
the units to play games on. And they can't say when there will be more
units available, and they aren't taking advance orders.

So now that I can't get my hands on one, I've got a bad attack of the
I-wants.

Is there some secret to knowing when and where they will be available,
or should I start looking through the more dubious-looking stores in
Akiba?

Hmm. You could try the _smaller_ places in Shinjuku.

True... but in this heat I was not thrilled at the thought so went home.
I thought I could just pop into one of the biggies (preferably Yodobashi
because I have their card) and just pick one up there and then.

You could also try calling around.

Yup--Kakaku lists several that claim to have it in stock. Duh...
Should've done my homework first, of course.

Or you could order one from the US. Yes, it's carrying coals to
Newcastle, but you do what you have to. Wal*Mart claims to have
them in stock, and there are more than 100 of them currently
listed on eBay. Six of those on eBay are the Japanese model.

Wow. Not that I've had much luck with ebay in the past, since I have to
filter out all those vendors that refuse to ship outside of the States
and insist on only PayPal.

Thinks: would a Japanese-language package work on a US-localized version
anyway (or is the "localization" just a menu option and an English
manual?)
